Recording a pop song cover Unit 48

Cover of Yellow by Coldplay:
Yellow is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. The band wrote the song and co-produced it with British record producer Ken Nelson for their debut album, Parachutes (2000). The song's lyrics are a reference to band vocalist Chris Martin's unrequited love.
The song was recorded in March 2000, and released in June that same year as the second single from Parachutes, following "Shiver", and the lead single in the United States. The single reached number four in the UK Singles Chart, giving the band its first top-five hit in the United Kingdom. Helped by heavy rotation and usage in promotions, the song thrust the band into massive popularity. "Yellow" has since been covered by various recording artists worldwide, and remains one of the band's most popular songs.

Lyrics:
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all yellow
I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called yellow
So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know you know I love you so
You know I love you so
I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
Cause you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know
For you I'd bleed myself dry
For you I'd bleed myself dry
It's true
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do

1Task 3A: Multi – track Recording

Producer: Lewis Jones

Primary Sound Engineer: Ryan Hobin

Name and artist of song chosen: Yellow By Coldplay

Instruments you will use, and how you will mic these (microphone placement).

 Acoustic Guitar:
To mic this I will use two AKG C1000S, these are condenser microphones. One of the mics will be placed in front of the sound hole around 20cm away; this will capture the higher frequencies closer to the bridge. The other microphone will be placed 25cm in front of the neck to capture the lower frequencies resonating from the guitar. This means that more of the sound is being captured, therefore getting a more ambient tone. putting the both tracks together will mean a lot more of the resonance is captured
Electric Guitar:
To mic this guitar I will plug the guitar into a fender 20 watt amp. I will then use a Shure SM58 placed in front of the edge of the speaker and a AKG C1000S which will be facing the other way in the opposite corner of the of the studio, this will be used to capture the ambient sound coming from the amp, so when both tracks are joined together the guitar will sound a high quality which is clean but also have some natural ambience.
Bass Guitar:
The bass that will be recorded is an Epiphone. To record the bass guitar I will be using a DI input instead of using a microphone next to an amp, this is because this ensures no background noise is captured and the bass sound is very clean. This means that the bass is directly plugged into the mixing desk and then straight into Cubase. This means that it will be a lot easier to get a good sound and will also be quick to set up. The mixing desk has a built in DI ready input so we wont need to use a DI box as well.
Vocals:
To record the vocals I will be using a Rode NT1A and a pop shield to ensure a high quality sound. The pop shield will mean that any unintentional sounds from the singer are not picked up and ensure that it is just the voice. I will record multiple vocal tracks in the build up to the chorus, as this is what the original does. I might also record the vocalist performing harmonies in the chorus.

Keyboard:

To record the keyboard I will also use DI as it will capture a very crisp recording with no background noise as also makes the recording process very easy as It is plugged directly into the mixing desk.

Individual Tracks:

Evaluation:
Acoustic Guitar:
I thought that the acoustic guitar tracks sounded good as we were able to capture the majority of the tone resonating from the guitar, this is because we used the two mics instead of just one. this means that it sounded more of a fuller tone. However i think it could of been improved by maybe rerecording some of the parts again. This is because in certain parts small mistakes were made.

Bass Guitar:
the bass guitar track went well and sounded very clean as it was recorded using DI this meaning there was no unwanted sounds.

Piano:

The piano track went very well as it was performed very well and the two AkG mics picked up a great sound.

Electric Guitar:
I think that the electric guitar had a good tone and was performed well however I think it could be rerecorded to make sure that it was perfectly in tune.

Vocals
the vocals were sang very well however because of a breakage to the Rode mic we had to instead use a shure SM58, it sounded good but not as crisp as it could have done with the Rode. to improve it i would have rerecorded it with gain turned down as certain points there is a slight amount of distortion.

Tambourine
the tambourine sound good as it had a good tone captured by the SM58.

Full track evaluation:
The full track sounded professional however I thought that it would sound better with backing vocals and a drum kit. I also thought that the piano and tambourine could be slightly turned down as it at some points drowned out the electric guitar as well as the acoustic guitar ,however other than that, I thought that the track sounded very professional and close to the original Coldplay recording.
